The Park Ridge Fire Department responded to an activated fire alarm at a residence on North Fifth Street. Upon arrival, crews found an audible alarm and were unable to make contact with the homeowners. After completing an entire check of the exterior of the house, and believing that the residents were home, members “respectfully”forced entry through a window to investigate the situation and ensure everyone's safety.
Once inside, firefighters detected a burning odor and observed a visible smoke condition. The source was identified as a smoldering trash bag in the kitchen. After removal from the home, the bag briefly flared up but was safely extinguished outside the residence. During the search of the residence, personnel were located the homeowners, who were unaware of the incident.
This situation serves as a reminder of the importance of functioning fire alarms in protecting lives and property. Members of the Park Ridge Volunteer Fire Department through extensive training was able to swiftly act and place the incident under control before any damage had occurred to the structure itself.
